Sims 4 Adding User Content, Making Hollywood Movie, but No Sims 5

The Sims 4 turned 10 on Sept. 2, but don't expect the popular social-simulation game to be replaced by a fifth edition any time soon. Kate Gorman, EA vice president and general manager of The Sims franchise, told Variety that the game company has no plans for a fifth Sims game, instead focusing on updates to and expansions for The Sims 4.

Gorman told Variety that in the past, Sims games were seen as replacements for the numbered games before then, but now the company is "going to be adding to our universe."

The company will still support The Sims 4 and deliver updates, fixes and expansion packs.

"With that, you'll see there are more ways to experience The Sims on different platforms, different ways to play, transmedia and lots of great offerings within this universe," Gorman said.

She also said that by not having to start afresh with a new game, players will be able to continue with the "families and generations" they've built up in The Sims 4.

In a blog post, EA reports that the new The Sims Creator Program will evolve and expand how the game works with creators, from YouTubers to designers. Interested users should visit the already existing EA Creator Network, request to join and select The Sims as their primary franchise.

The company also announced it's partnering with Amazon MGM Studios to make a movie based on The Sims, though no release date or plot details were shared.

While a representative for EA told CNET that The Sims has no plans to add a multiplayer experience, there's another EA gaming project, Project Rene, that will allow players to join friends and other players at a shared location. Interested players can sign up to playtest that feature via The Sims Labs
