'The Last of Us' Season 2 Teaser Drags Ellie and Joel Into Dire Hellscape

Ellie and Joel's post-apocalyptic journey continues in a new trailer for The Last of Us season 2.

The HBO drama series based on the video game franchise won't return until sometime in 2025, but the fresh teaser offers a two-minute look at what's to come. It's cold, dark, chilling and has hair-raising tension with an underlying question: "What did you do?"

According to HBO, the Sept. 26 preview coincides with The Last of Us Day, held on "the date on which the cordyceps virus catalyzed the events of The Last of Us."

In addition to Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, who play protagonists Joel and Ellie, season 2 will once again star Gabriel Luna as Joel's brother Tommy and Rutina Wesley as his wife, Maria. The trailer shows off new cast members including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina and guest star Catherine O'Hara.

The first installment of The Last of Us, HBO's most-watched debut TV show season ever, takes place two decades after the end of civilization and follows its teenage and adult duo as they navigate the terrifying infected and other horrors. Season 2 will pick up following five years of peace, according to HBO, but it doesn't seem it'll last. Per the synopsis, "Joel and Ellie's collective past catches up to them, drawing them into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind."
