The Juul class action lawsuit is paying people huge amounts of money

Payouts from Juul’s $300 million class action settlement are finally getting distributed — and some people are getting a lot more money than they expected.

If you scroll through the r/juul subreddit, you can see posts showing the thousands — or hundreds — of dollars hitting people’s Venmo accounts. One screenshot shows someone who said they received more than $9,000, while others report receiving $6,200 and $4,600.

Judging by the comments on some of these posts, it appears people who submitted receipts for their Juul pods or pens may have gotten bigger payouts, and with some users spending hundreds of dollars per week on vaping, the amounts added up.

The payouts stem from a class action lawsuit that alleged Juul customers were misled about the safety and addictiveness of its vaping products. It also claimed Juul customers wouldn’t have paid as much for Juul products if they were aware of the risks. As noted in a legal filing, the court authorized payments totaling $201.9 million for around 842,000 valid claims.

Juul agreed to a $255 million settlement last year, while the tobacco giant Altria — which invested in Juul — also agreed to pay $45 million. People who purchased Juul products before December 7th, 2022, were able to submit a claim.
